About the course

The Graduate Certificate in Dental Therapy (Advanced Clinical Practice) expands restorative (dental therapy scope) qualifications for treating patients of all ages. It is designed for currently practising dental or oral health therapists and develops advanced capability in adult restorative practice. The program uses blended delivery with self-paced online learning, Zoom tutorials, and includes two weeks of supported clinical practice in the Melbourne Dental School clinics.

What you might learn

This course aims to qualify oral health therapists and dental therapists to provide restorative care for patients of all ages, including adult oral health examination, diagnosis and treatment planning. Students develop skills to diagnose, plan and deliver restorative care, and to manage complex and medically compromised patients. It also strengthens knowledge in periodontology and cariology, prosthodontics, oral medicine and pharmacology, local anaesthesia, dental materials, and dental emergency management.

Career outcome

Graduates can expand their scope and capability in adult restorative dental therapy practice, supporting treatment of patients across the lifespan. The qualification can open additional career pathways within clinical oral health services by enabling more advanced restorative care and management of complex presentations. Outcomes are relevant to roles in dental clinics and oral health services where enhanced adult restorative practice is required.

Entry requirements

Only available to registered practicing dental therapists (DTs) and oral health therapists (OHTs), and DTs/OHTs eligible for registration in Australia. This is not a workforce re-entry program; applicants need current restorative knowledge and recency of practice. English language requirement: IELTS 6.5 with no band less than 6.0.
