About the course

This one-year honours program builds on the Bachelor of Visual Arts and reflects ANU’s research-led approach. It develops advanced theoretical and practical understanding of contemporary visual arts through an integrated studio and contextual research focus. Students design and implement a substantial research project, commonly producing a coherent body of artworks for installation or exhibition, aimed at generating new understandings or addressing complex creative problems.

What you might learn

You will strengthen advanced skills in visual arts research principles, methods and critical theory while extending studio practice. The program develops your capacity to plan, conduct and communicate a sustained research project, linking conceptual inquiry with making and reflective analysis. Through supervised work and a thesis component, you learn to investigate a focused creative question, integrate contextual research, and present outcomes professionally in written and exhibited forms.

Career outcome

Graduates are prepared for advanced professional practice in the visual arts and related creative industries, and for further study such as higher degrees by research. Typical pathways include professional artist or creative practitioner, exhibiting or commissioning work, and roles supporting arts production and presentation. The honours research experience also supports careers in arts organisations, curatorial or gallery contexts, cultural project work, and research or teaching-oriented trajectories.

Entry requirements

Applicants must meet ANU program-specific academic/non-academic requirements and English language requirements. Admission is competitive and depends on places available. Entry to Honours also requires supervisory capacity and approval by the relevant delegated authority. Normally you need a Bachelor of Visual Arts (ANU or equivalent) with a weighted average mark of at least 70%, based on highest final marks (excluding 1000-level), from the workshop major, plus written approval of an identified thesis supervisor.
