About the course

This one-year honours program in statistics is designed for high-achieving graduates who want an intensive, research-focused year within ANU’s Research School of Finance, Actuarial Studies and Applied Statistics. You undertake advanced study alongside an independent research project under academic supervision. The degree provides strong preparation for professional statistical practice and can be a pathway into higher research degrees such as a PhD.

What you might learn

You develop advanced capability in statistical theory and methods while learning how to design, conduct and communicate independent statistical research. The program builds skills in critical thinking, problem formulation, quantitative analysis and interpretation of complex data. Through supervised research and honours coursework, you strengthen academic writing and presentation skills and gain experience working to research standards expected in professional and doctoral-level study.

Career outcome

Graduates are suited to roles requiring high-level statistical analysis and evidence-based decision-making. Typical pathways include statistician or data analyst positions in government agencies, consulting, finance, insurance, health, research organisations and industry, as well as analytics roles supporting policy and business strategy. The honours research experience also provides preparation for PhD study and careers in academic or applied research settings.

Entry requirements

Applicants must meet ANU program-specific academic and English language requirements. Entry is competitive and depends on places available; honours admission also requires supervisory capacity and approval by the relevant delegated authority. A completed AQF Level 7 bachelor degree (or equivalent) within the last two years is required, in a cognate discipline and meeting prerequisites specified in the Statistics Honours specialisation.
