About the course

This one-year psychology honours program at ANU builds on prior undergraduate psychology study and reflects a research-led approach. You deepen your understanding across psychological science and develop advanced capability in research principles, methods and theory. A major focus is designing and completing an honours research project, preparing you for professional pathways or progression to higher degrees by research.

What you might learn

You will strengthen advanced knowledge of key psychological concepts and contemporary research, and learn how to plan, conduct and communicate independent research. The program develops skills in research design, data handling and critical evaluation of evidence, alongside deeper theoretical understanding in areas relevant to psychology honours. Training culminates in an honours-level project that tackles complex questions or problems.

Career outcome

Graduates are prepared for roles that value advanced research and analytical skills across psychology-related settings. Typical pathways include research assistant or junior analyst roles in universities, government and industry, as well as positions in health, education and community organisations using evidence-based practice. The honours year is also a common stepping stone toward postgraduate research degrees and further professional psychology training.

Entry requirements

Applicants must meet ANU academic/non-academic and English language requirements. Entry is competitive and honours admission depends on supervisory capacity and delegated approval. Intake is Semester 1 only. Requires an AQF Level 7 BSc (Psychology) or equivalent completed within the last two years, with a weighted average mark equivalent to ANU 70% in relevant cognate psychology coursework (including APAC-accredited 2000/3000-level courses).
