About the course

This one-year honours program is a flexible, research-led science degree that lets you specialise across a wide range of disciplines such as biology, climate science, psychology or astrophysics. You build advanced disciplinary knowledge and strong research capability, culminating in designing and completing an independent research project aimed at tackling complex real-world problems.

What you might learn

You will develop advanced understanding of research principles, methods and theoretical concepts relevant to your chosen science discipline. The program builds skills in project design, critical analysis, and applying evidence to address complex questions. Through supervised honours study, you learn to plan and conduct research and communicate findings in a scholarly and professional manner.

Career outcome

Graduates are prepared for research-focused roles and higher study, including pathways to PhD programs. Depending on the honours specialisation, careers may include laboratory or field researcher, data analyst, scientific officer, environmental or health research roles, science communicator, or technical and policy roles in government agencies, research institutes, industry, and not-for-profit organisations.

Entry requirements

Applicants must meet ANU academic/non-academic and English language requirements and are selected competitively. Entry normally requires an AQF Level 7 Bachelor of Science (or equivalent) completed within the last two years, with a weighted average mark equivalent to ANU 70% based on the best 36 units in the cognate discipline (excluding 1000-level courses). Admission also depends on supervisory capacity and approval by the relevant delegated authority.
