About the course

This three-year undergraduate program introduces the biomedical sciences underpinning human health and disease. You study core areas such as genetics, immunology, physiology, microbiology, biochemistry, anatomy and nutrition, and learn from active researchers and health professionals. The program is designed to build a strong foundation for further study and careers in medical science and research, with practical and workplace-focused learning included.

What you might learn

You will develop an understanding of how the human body functions at molecular, cellular and systems levels, and how disease processes arise. The degree builds quantitative research and analytical skills through laboratory and data-focused coursework, and supports transdisciplinary problem-solving. You also gain experience applying medical science in professional contexts, preparing you to engage with research evidence, experimental design and emerging biomedical advances.

Career outcome

Graduates are prepared for roles across biomedical and health-related research and support settings, including laboratory-based medical science and research assistant positions in universities, institutes, hospitals and industry. The degree can also provide a pathway into postgraduate study in biomedical science, public health and related disciplines. Skills in experimental methods, data analysis and scientific communication are applicable to diagnostics, biotech and health innovation sectors.

Entry requirements

Entry is based on meeting ANU admission requirements for undergraduate study. The indicative minimum selection rank is ATAR 85 (or IB 33). Applicants may also need to satisfy any prerequisites and provide any required supporting documentation depending on their qualification pathway (domestic or international). Check ANU application guidance for which admission rules apply to you.
