About the course

Mathematics sits behind modern technology and scientific innovation. This three-year, research-focused degree is designed for high-achieving students who want deep training in advanced mathematics and its applications. You study core mathematical theory alongside modelling and problem-solving, with room for electives across science and related disciplines. The program is delivered in person at ANU and is aimed at exceptional quantitative students.

What you might learn

You will build strong quantitative problem-solving and critical thinking skills, grounded in advanced calculus, algebra and analysis. The program develops mathematical modelling capability and the ability to reason rigorously, construct proofs and apply mathematics to real-world and scientific contexts. You also learn to work independently and collaboratively, drawing on diverse perspectives, while progressing through structured coursework and higher-level mathematics subjects.

Career outcome

Graduates are prepared for mathematically intensive roles across industry, government and research. Typical pathways include data and quantitative analysis, modelling and simulation, finance and risk, technology and analytics, scientific computing, and further study in mathematics or related fields. The strong theoretical foundation also supports careers in academia, national research agencies, and roles requiring advanced reasoning and problem-solving.

Entry requirements

Entry is competitive and typically requires a minimum ATAR of 95 (or IB 39) or an accepted equivalent pathway. Applicants must meet ANU undergraduate admission rules and any published prerequisites for mathematics studies. The program is research-focused and expects strong quantitative preparation. Semester 2 commencement is not available.
