About the course

This one-year honours program builds on prior language studies and reflects ANU’s research-led approach. It develops advanced understanding of language studies and related theoretical concepts while training you in research principles and methods. Students complete a substantial supervised research project culminating in an honours thesis, designed to generate new insights or address complex problems relevant to language, linguistics, or cultural/literary studies.

What you might learn

You will strengthen skills in designing and conducting independent research, including selecting and applying appropriate qualitative and/or quantitative methods. The program develops advanced academic writing and critical analysis, culminating in a substantial honours thesis. Depending on project area, you may focus on linguistics research methods and readings, or on literary/cultural/film studies approaches, preparing you for professional roles or further research study.

Career outcome

Graduates are prepared for pathways where advanced language expertise and research capability are valued. Typical outcomes include research or policy support roles, cultural and international engagement work, education-related positions, and roles in government or organisations requiring strong communication and analytical skills. The honours thesis and research training also provide a strong foundation for higher degrees by research and academic or applied research careers.

Entry requirements

Applicants must meet ANU program-specific academic/non-academic and English language requirements. Entry is competitive and honours admission depends on supervisory capacity and delegated approval. A relevant bachelor qualification (Bachelor of Languages or equivalent) is required, plus a weighted average mark equivalent to 70% calculated from the best 36 units in the major (excluding 1000-level courses). Written approval of an identified thesis supervisor and convenor permission are required.
