About the course

The Japanese Major (BA) develops high-level literacy in Japanese alongside an advanced understanding of Japanese culture. It accommodates beginners through to advanced learners, with no prior Japanese study required. Teaching focuses on spoken and written communication using current technology and cultural awareness activities, and can be combined with a second major, electives or a double degree within the Bachelor of Arts. This is an undergraduate major in languages and culture.

Career outcome

This major prepares you for careers where Japanese language and cultural capability support international engagement. Graduates may pursue roles such as interpreter/translator, tourism or accommodation professional, trade-related consultant, language teacher (with further qualification) or airline cabin crew. It also supports work across international trade, diplomacy, foreign affairs, government, banking and finance, media, education, and tourism and hospitality. This is an undergraduate pathway in language-focused careers.
