About the course

This three-year undergraduate degree examines security and war through a broad international lens. You’ll study the history and causes of conflict, strategic competition, and contemporary challenges such as terrorism, cybersecurity, environmental security and emerging technologies. The program emphasises the implications of security issues for Australia and the Asia-Pacific, combining academic scholarship with practical engagement with policy and civil-society responses.

What you might learn

Students build strong empirical knowledge of international security and develop analytical tools to interpret conflict and contemporary threats. The degree aims to strengthen communication and critical thinking so graduates can assess security problems, evaluate evidence and arguments, and engage with real-world policy debates. Study options encourage combining security studies with language, regional or issue-based majors/minors to deepen contextual understanding.

Career outcome

Graduates are prepared for roles in government and policy settings, including diplomacy and foreign affairs, defence and strategic analysis, and intelligence or security advisory work. The degree also supports careers with international organisations such as the United Nations, and with aid and development agencies. Private-sector and NGO pathways are common where risk, geopolitics and security issues affect operations and decision-making.

Entry requirements

Applicants generally need an ATAR of 85 or an IB score of 33 (or equivalent). Entry pathways may vary depending on applicant type and eligibility for adjustment factors. Applicants should also meet ANU’s general admission requirements and any relevant prerequisites or assumed knowledge for undergraduate study.
