About the course

This one-year honours degree offers research-led training in genetics within ANU’s College of Science and Medicine. Genetics is treated as a multidisciplinary area spanning classical, molecular and population genetics through to bioinformatics. You complete an honours specialisation aligned to ANU strengths and undertake an approved genetics-focused research project, building advanced disciplinary knowledge and experience designing and delivering independent research.

What you might learn

You will develop advanced understanding of genetics concepts and research methods, and learn to design, implement and communicate an independent honours project in genetics. The program builds skills in analysing complex biological data, applying theoretical concepts to research questions, and working with supervision and approvals typical of professional research environments. It prepares graduates for research careers or progression to higher degrees by research.

Career outcome

Graduates are prepared for roles that value advanced research capability in genetics and related biosciences. Typical pathways include entry-level research positions in universities, medical research institutes and biotechnology or bioinformatics settings, as well as laboratory and scientific analysis roles in health, agriculture and environmental sectors. The honours year also supports progression to PhD or other higher degree by research programs.

Entry requirements

Applicants must meet ANU program-specific academic/non-academic and English language requirements. Entry is competitive and honours places depend on supervisory capacity and approval. A completed AQF Level 7 Bachelor of Genetics (or equivalent) within the past two years is required, with a weighted average mark equivalent to ANU 70% calculated from the best 36 units in a discipline cognate to the honours specialisation (excluding 1000-level courses).
