About the course

The Theatre specialisation is an intensive studio-based training program for actors and theatre makers that prepares artists to become accomplished performers and skilled devisers of their own work. Across the course you develop your own voice and vision as a practising theatre maker while building expertise in contemporary theatre practice including acting, devising, performing in varied contexts and forms, writing, dramaturgy and directing. Students also choose breadth subjects from across the University and collaborate with VCA students from other disciplines, with opportunities such as residencies, immersive field trips and study tours.

What you might learn

Students build a command of core performance and theatre-making skills including body, voice, movement, acting, devising and collaboration. The course develops the ability to create new work from diverse sources and stimuli, consolidate a professional working methodology as both performer and theatre maker, and practise ensemble-based approaches to making theatre. It also supports industry readiness through collaborative projects and immersive experiences such as tours or residency work.

Career outcome

Graduates can pursue work as professional theatre artists, including performers and independent theatre makers who devise and produce original work. The training supports pathways into related creative industries such as community arts and education, and screen and audio contexts including film, television, radio and new media. Graduates may also progress to a fourth-year Honours degree as a pathway into advanced graduate study options in acting.
