About the course
The Bachelor of Fine Arts (Production) at the Victorian College of the Arts trains designers, technicians, makers and managers for live performance. Students develop conceptual and technical capabilities through studio-based learning that progresses into real production environments. The course is highly collaborative, with opportunities to contribute to large-scale performances alongside VCA Music Theatre, Theatre, Acting and Dance students, supported by staff and mentors active in the industry.
What you might learn
Students build extensive specialist skills in areas such as design, stage management, set and props, costume, lighting, sound, and digital media/projection. The course develops practical ability to design and realise production elements across varied performance contexts, while strengthening creative problem-solving and professional working methods. It also aims to prepare students to work autonomously and collaboratively within professional performing arts production teams.
Career outcome
Graduates can pursue careers across the live performance and broader performing arts sector in design, technical and production management roles. Typical pathways include costume, set, lighting and sound/audio design, as well as stage management, wardrobe and related production departments.
