About the course

The Bachelor of Fine Arts (Degree with Honours) is a one-year program focused on independent, practice-led research in a chosen field of artistic practice. It develops research capability and deepens understanding of contemporary creative practice and theoretical discourse through a substantial creative research project. Students work closely with leading practitioner-academics at the University’s Southbank campus in Melbourne’s arts precinct.

What you might learn

Students build rigorous practice-led research skills by devising, defining, researching and managing a major creative project under individual supervision. The course strengthens critical thinking and the ability to connect creative enquiry with theoretical and critical curiosity. It is designed to develop advanced independent artistic practice and research training aligned with honours-level study.

Career outcome

Graduates are prepared for professional practice as artists and creative practitioners across disciplines such as visual art, dance, theatre, film/television and design/production. The honours year also provides a direct pathway into higher research study, including masters by research and PhD programs. Career directions can include independent artistic practice, creative development roles, performance-making, production and project-based work within the arts and cultural sectors.

Entry requirements

Applicants are required to be of proven ability and aptitude and engage in research training through a major creative research project in their chosen field of artistic practice.
