About the course

This one-year honours program in finance is designed for high-achieving students seeking a challenging, research-focused experience within ANU’s Research School of Finance, Actuarial Studies and Applied Statistics. You’ll undertake advanced coursework and independent research under academic supervision, building strong analytical and quantitative capability. Graduates are well placed for competitive roles, with past students securing positions in leading investment banks and related finance industries worldwide.

What you might learn

Students develop the ability to conduct independent finance research and apply advanced financial theory and methods to real problems. The program builds skills in critical analysis, research design, quantitative reasoning and clear communication of findings. With close guidance from academic staff, you learn to evaluate evidence, work with financial data and produce a substantial honours-level research output that supports further study or high-level professional practice.

Career outcome

Graduates are suited to analytical and research-oriented careers across finance and related sectors. Typical pathways include roles in investment banking, asset management, corporate finance, treasury, financial consulting, risk and quantitative analysis, and market research. The honours research experience also provides strong preparation for higher degree research (e.g., a PhD) and for roles requiring advanced problem-solving, data-driven decision-making and rigorous financial modelling.

Entry requirements

Applicants must meet ANU’s program-specific academic/non-academic and English language requirements. Entry is competitive and subject to available places. Admission to Honours also depends on supervisory capacity and approval within the Academic College. Applicants need an AQF Level 7 Bachelor degree (or equivalent) completed within the last two years, in a cognate discipline, and must meet the requirements for the Finance Honours specialisation.
