About the course

This five-year Honours degree builds on ANU’s Environment and Sustainability studies and reflects the University’s research strength in the field. You’ll design and complete a substantial, supervised research project on an environment or sustainability topic, developing advanced disciplinary knowledge and research capability. The program is designed to support professional practice in environmental areas or progression to a higher degree by research.

What you might learn

You will learn to plan and implement an independent research project, applying appropriate research principles, methods and theoretical concepts relevant to environment and sustainability. The degree strengthens skills in critical analysis, evidence-based decision making, and communicating complex findings. It develops holistic thinking and the ability to generate new insights or solutions to complex environmental and sustainability challenges.

Career outcome

Graduates may pursue roles where research capability and environmental expertise are valued, including work in environmental consulting, sustainability strategy, natural resource management, conservation, climate and environmental policy, and research support roles in government, industry or NGOs. The Honours research experience also provides a strong pathway to postgraduate research (e.g., higher degree by research) in environment and sustainability fields.

Entry requirements

Applicants must meet ANU academic/non-academic and English language requirements. Entry is competitive and Honours admission depends on supervisory capacity and approval. Normally requires an AQF Level 7 Bachelor of Environment and Sustainability (or equivalent) completed within the last two years, with a weighted average mark equivalent to 70% calculated from 36 units in the discipline cognate to the honours specialisation (excluding 1000-level courses), plus any additional specialisation requirements.
