About the course

This one-year honours program provides research-led advanced study in criminology. Building on prior criminology studies, it deepens theoretical understanding of crime and justice and develops strong research capability. Students design and undertake an independent research project, typically a substantial thesis, supported by advanced coursework and methods training. The degree prepares graduates for professional roles requiring analytical skills or progression to higher degree research.

What you might learn

You will strengthen your understanding of criminological theory and justice issues while developing advanced research skills. The program focuses on research principles, methodology selection, data analysis, and ethical inquiry, alongside scholarly writing. Through a supervised thesis project, you learn to frame complex questions, apply appropriate methods, and produce original work that contributes new insights or practical solutions to criminology-related problems.

Career outcome

Graduates are prepared for roles that value research, evaluation, and policy capability in criminology and justice settings. Potential pathways include research assistant or analyst positions, policy and program evaluation in government agencies, justice and community organisations, and consultancy work involving crime prevention and social policy. The honours thesis also provides a strong foundation for further study, including a higher degree by research.

Entry requirements

Applicants must hold an ANU Bachelor of Criminology degree, or an equivalent qualification from another institution. A weighted average mark of at least 70% is required, calculated from the best 36 units of completed courses (excluding 1000-level courses and limited to those listed in the Bachelor of Criminology). Entry also requires written approval from an identified supervisor for the THES4103 Thesis component.
