About the course

This three-year Bachelor of Criminology explores crime and responses to crime through multiple disciplinary perspectives. You examine how crime is defined and represented, the social, political and individual factors linked to offending, and how criminal justice institutions operate. The program emphasises critical thinking and evidence-based analysis, with topics such as policing, courts, prisons, punishment, organised and transnational crime, drugs and youth crime.

What you might learn

You will build a grounded understanding of criminological theories and contemporary debates, and learn to analyse crime as a social phenomenon. The degree develops critical reasoning alongside empirical research skills, including qualitative and quantitative methods. Through study of criminal justice practices and policy approaches, you gain the ability to evaluate crime control measures and their impacts across communities and institutions.

Career outcome

Graduates are prepared for roles where understanding crime, justice and social policy is valuable. Typical pathways include work in criminal justice and corrections, policing-related policy and analysis, government departments, community and youth services, victim support, research organisations and NGOs. The program’s focus on critical thinking and research methods also supports careers in policy evaluation, program design and broader public-sector and social research roles.

Entry requirements

Entry is based on meeting ANU undergraduate admission requirements. The indicative selection rank listed is ATAR 80 (or International Baccalaureate 30). Applicants may be eligible for adjustment factors that can improve competitiveness. Other pathway or category-specific criteria may apply depending on your applicant type, and supporting documentation is required for assessment.
