About the course

This honours year extends ACU’s Western Civilisation program through a ‘great books’ approach to the history of ideas in Western culture. Building on prior liberal arts study, you undertake advanced seminars in hermeneutics and critical interpretation of key texts, alongside research training. The program culminates in a substantial capstone honours thesis developed from an interdisciplinary perspective in Arts & Humanities. The programme combines disciplinary knowledge, applied learning, and graduate competencies for professional career entry.

Career outcome

Graduates develop advanced skills in critical reading, research design, scholarly writing and interpretation of influential Western texts, supported by thesis work and research methods training. This preparation suits pathways into higher degree research as well as roles requiring strong analysis and communication, such as cultural and education organisations, publishing and media, policy and public service, or community and not-for-profit work in Arts & Humanities. Preparing graduates for graduate employment, professional traineeships, and further postgraduate study.
