Exciting changes are coming to Australia’s skilled Visa system starting 7 December 2024! Whether you’re a student, recent graduate, or skilled worker planning to migrate, this guide breaks down what you need to know in simple terms.
What’s New?
The Core Skills Occupation List (CSOL) and a new Skills in Demand (SID) Visa will replace the old Temporary Skill Shortage (TSS) Visa. These updates aim to better match skilled migrants to the areas where Australia needs help the most.
The Core Skills Occupation List (CSOL)
The CSOL highlights 456 key occupations that Australia needs in areas like:
- Construction;
- Agriculture;
- Cybersecurity;
- Education;
- Health.
What Has Changed?
Some jobs have been removed from the list, meaning they’re no longer eligible for sponsorship under the CSOL framework. These include roles like:
- Childcare Centre Manager;
- Cafe or Restaurant Manager;
- Conference and Event Organiser;
- Emergency Service Worker;
- Financial Investment Manager;
- Graphic Designer;
- Interpreter;
- ICT Support Engineer;
- Nutritionist;
- Nurse Manager;
- Telecommunications Engineer;
- Tennis Coach;
- Teacher of English to Speakers of Other Languages;
- Sportspersons.
If you’re in one of these roles, don’t worry! Alternative Visa pathways might still be available. You can always reach out to us for a chat to plan this out together here.
The New Skills in Demand (SID) Visa
The SID visa is replacing the old TSS Visa and offers exciting benefits:
- Stay in Australia for up to 4 years or 5 years if you are a Hong Kong passport holder;
- Clear pathway to permanent residence;
- Faster processing and reduced work experience requirements compared to the TSS.
SID Visa Streams
The SID Visa has three main streams:
- Core Skills Stream: For jobs on the CSOL with a salary of at least A$ 73,150.
- Specialist Skills Stream: For highly skilled workers earning over A$ 135,000 annually.
- Labour Agreement Stream: This will soon be replaced by an Essential Skills Stream which is still under development.
Why It Matters?
Australia’s updated system makes it easier for employers and skilled workers to connect. If you’re considering a move, the SID Visa is your ticket to a smoother migration journey and long-term stability in Australia.
What Should You Do Next?
Planning Your Career in Australia
If you’re studying or working towards a career in Australia, it’s important to check if your chosen field is on the updated Core Skills Occupation List (CSOL). If your dream job has been removed, don’t panic! You can explore alternative Visa pathways or pivot to a related in-demand field. This is a great chance to align your skills with what Australia truly needs.
Pathways for Current Visa Holders
If you’re already on a Temporary Skill Shortage (TSS) Visa, there’s still good news! You can work towards permanent residence under the new arrangements, as long as you meet the eligibility criteria. The TSS Visa application window closed on 6 December 2024, but applications submitted before then will still be processed.
