There are two options to choose from to set up your Australian mobile number.
This option provides you with the flexibility to control how much you spend every month. Pre-card SIM cards are sold in many shop and supermarkets, as well as mobile service providers. You top up credit every month as needed, and can stop using the service at any time.
This option locks you in for a fixed period (usually a year or more) but will work out to be cheaper if you intend to stay in Australia for a while. You can choose from a range of plans that come with you a new phone (at little to no cost!), and pay a fixed amount each month for a certain amount of data.
The major mobile phone services providers in Australia are Optus, Telstra and Vodafone.
Your education provider will generally provide free internet and computer facilities on campus. Free Wi-Fi is also available in many public places, including the State Libraries, Starbucks and sometimes, the city itself. It’s easy to arrange a home internet connection with plenty of internet service providers in Australia. You may want to sign up for internet and mobile phone plan from the same service provider for extra benefits and discounts.
