Understanding and maintaining balance across the lifespan

Why does our balance deteriorate as we get older? Is there anything we can do about it? Are you or your parents at risk of falling?

Professor Sandy Brauer, Head of School, and Professor of Physiotherapy at the University of Queensland is a world leader in understanding balance control with age and pathology. She will answer these questions and more in an interactive workshop.

Professor Sandra Brauer

As Head of Physiotherapy since 2013 and Head of the School of Health and Rehabilitation Sciences, Sandy is responsible for many aspects of leadership and management related to the staff, programs, research, and external relations across the disciplines of Physiotherapy, Occupational Therapy, Speech Pathology, and Audiology. In particular, she provides academic leadership in Physiotherapy across all areas of teaching and learning, research and engagement, and is a member of the Council of Physiotherapy Deans of Australia and New Zealand.

Her research focuses on understanding limitations in functional performance, such as walking, in people with neurological disorders, particularly Parkinson’s disease and stroke. Sandy leads a number of studies to better understand the underlying motor control mechanisms contributing to the altered performance of walking or reaching, particularly in populations with neurological disorders, and uses this information to better develop physiotherapy assessment techniques and rehabilitation strategies.
