Planning to challenge yourself and embark on a study journey in the USA?
5 easy steps and you will be on your way!
1. Research your options
What do you want? There is no official ranking system for colleges and universities in the States. The best institution for you is the one that best meets your requirements- academic, financial, and personal. You are encouraged to start researching at least 1 year before the academic year. There are different ranges of institutions you can opt for including community colleges, private and public research universities.
2. Finance your studies
Invest in yourself! The tuition fees vary across the USA. Evaluating your finance for study and living in the States is an important factor affecting your institution’s selection. Location matters! Suburban or rural areas in the South and Midwest of the USA generally have the lowest cost of living. Furthermore, universities usually offer scholarships and financial aid for high achieving students. What’s more, students on an F1 visa are allowed to work not more than 20 hours a week during semesters and full-time during semester breaks on-campus. This would be an added point to earn a living allowance.
3. Complete your application
Application to the university can be tedious as each college and university typically establish their own admission requirements. International students may be required to provide the foreign credential evaluation for international qualification, sit for an admission test or English proficiency test. It is good to engage an AUG professional counselor at this stage to ease you on your document preparations and application submission. Most of our USA partner institutions are able to waive application fees.
4. Apply for your Student Visa
Congratulations! You would have received your admission and the I-20 statement at this stage. Visa processing fees and SEVIS fees are applicable. Do take note that visa interview is scheduled on an appointment basis. Not to worry as our AUG professionals will guide you through the Student Visa application process.
5. Prepare for your departure
You’ve made it! The final step is all about preparation. This includes making travel and accommodation arrangements, gathering pre-departure materials and documents, packing your luggage, and most importantly getting ready to step out of your comfort zone. A gentle reminder to browse through your institution’s website for further information about health insurance, local temperatures, transportation, housing, etc.
