The Graduate Certificate in Critical Care Nursing is designed to expand the scope of practice for registered nurses by building advanced knowledge, specialist skills and core competencies for critical care settings. It draws on current evidence-based practice for the care and management of critically ill patients and develops capability to plan, implement and evaluate care in high-pressure environments. The course is aligned with Australian College of Critical Care Nurses Practice Standards and is delivered in a blended model with hands-on, work-integrated learning.

The course builds analytical reasoning and problem-solving skills to manage the care of critically ill patients and support families in critical care contexts. Graduates can progress as critical care registered nurses providing care to high-dependency and critically ill patients in acute hospital environments. The qualification supports roles within multidisciplinary critical care teams and helps broaden clinical scope into specialist units such as intensive care and other critical care services. It may also strengthen pathways toward further postgraduate nursing study and advanced practice responsibilities within critical care settings.
Entry requirements
This course is for currently practising registered nurses. To be eligible, you must hold a Bachelor of Nursing degree (or equivalent training), documented clinical experience in an acute care setting within the five years prior to applying for the course, and current employment in a specialist nursing environment. To apply, you must be a registered nurse and have the support of your employing hospital for the Graduate Certificate in Critical Care Nursing, and the employing hospital must be equipped to support you to complete your studies. International nurses with a working visa who meet the course entry requirements are also eligible to apply. This course is not available to international students unless registered under APHRA as a Division 1 Registered Nurse or holding equivalent registration with an international health practitioner regulation agency.
