This graduate certificate introduces core social research skills for understanding change in Australian and global society, including political, demographic and economic forces. Delivered in a multi-modal format, it builds capability to work with social science methods and data. The program also provides a pathway into ANU’s Master of Social Research through the Centre for Social Research and Methods.

You will build foundational competence in social research methods and the use of data for analysis and decision-making. Study develops skills in identifying appropriate methods, working with different data types, and applying evidence to policy questions and evaluation. Elective choices allow you to extend capability in statistics, survey analysis, qualitative data collection, or applied social research practice.

Graduates can support or lead evidence-based research and evaluation across government, consulting, NGOs, and research organisations. Typical roles include policy or program evaluation officer, social research assistant/analyst, data and insights officer, survey or qualitative research practitioner, and project or research coordinator. The qualification also prepares students for further study in advanced social research methods.

Entry requirements

Applicants need a relevant prior qualification at AQF level (Bachelor, Graduate Certificate/Diploma, Masters, PhD or equivalent) with a minimum GPA of 4.0/7.0, or completion of 24 postgraduate units with a GPA of 4.0/7.0. Admission is competitive and applicants must also meet ANU English language requirements; meeting minimum requirements does not guarantee an offer.
