This undergraduate certificate introduces Indigenous mental health with a focus on improving the wellbeing of Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander peoples and communities. Over six months you’ll explore contributing factors to mental health, holistic approaches to care, common disorders such as depression, bipolar and anxiety, and the impacts of trans-generational trauma. You’ll also study human development and the effects of adverse childhood experiences, with an elective in health systems or Indigenous public health.

You’ll develop the ability to apply Indigenous mental health principles in varied contexts, use critical and creative problem solving, and communicate appropriately using technology with patients, carers and health professionals. The course also builds understanding of global perspectives and standards, encourages respect for Indigenous values, cultures and knowledges, and develops professional teamwork, independent practice and lifelong learning skills for paraprofessional or further study pathways.
