The Master of Neuroscience (Advanced) at ANU provides advanced theoretical and practical training in modern neuroscience, exploring how the brain and nervous system underpin behaviour and cognition. Based at the Eccles Institute of Neuroscience within the John Curtin School of Medical Research, students access contemporary facilities and leading researchers. The advanced program combines substantial coursework with an embedded research project and thesis in neuroscience at Master’s level.

You will build knowledge of cellular and systems neuroscience and learn to apply contemporary methodologies used in biomedical and behavioural neuroscience research. The program develops skills in experimental design, critical reading of scientific literature, data analysis, and communicating research findings. A major aim is to prepare students for independent research through a supervised project leading to a thesis, strengthening advanced capabilities expected in Master’s-level neuroscience training.

Graduates may pursue roles in biomedical and neuroscience research, research support and management, laboratory and clinical research environments, and neuroscience-related industries such as pharmaceuticals, medical technology, and health innovation. The research thesis component also provides preparation for further research training (e.g., PhD pathways). Career directions commonly include research assistant/associate positions, project officer roles, and scientific communication work in neuroscience at Master’s level.
Entry requirements
Applicants must hold a Bachelor degree (or international equivalent) with a minimum GPA of 5.5/7.0, including at least eight courses in a cognate discipline with a cognate GPA of 5.5/7.0. Admission is competitive, so meeting minimum requirements does not guarantee an offer. Applicants must also meet the University’s English language requirements and any additional program-specific requirements.
