This one-year master’s degree examines how global and regional security challenges—such as climate, health, poverty, nuclear risks and emerging technologies—interact and intensify each other. It takes a multidisciplinary approach and focuses strongly on Asia and the Pacific, where insecurity, crisis and innovation shape global agendas. The program emphasises diverse perspectives on security, including state, human, environmental, societal and cultural dimensions, and supports future decision-makers.

You will build the ability to analyse complex, interconnected security problems across disciplinary boundaries and from multiple viewpoints. Learning develops understanding of security and insecurity for states, societies and individuals, shaped by history, culture, gender, race, ethnicity and wealth. You will strengthen policy-focused thinking and strategy design, including consideration of Indigenous knowledges and practices, and gain tools to assess regional and global dynamics with an Asia–Pacific grounding.

Graduates are suited to roles dealing with security, strategy and policy in government, defence and national security agencies, foreign affairs and diplomacy, and international organisations. The program also supports careers in public policy, risk and strategic analysis, regulation and technology policy, humanitarian and development sectors, and research or advisory work focused on Asia–Pacific security challenges, governance and crisis response.

Entry requirements

Applicants must meet ANU English language requirements and be competitively assessed. Entry pathways include a cognate Bachelor degree with minimum GPA 5/7; a cognate Bachelor with GPA 4/7 plus a Graduate Certificate (GPA 4/7); a Bachelor (GPA 4/7) plus at least 3 years relevant ANZSCO Skill Level 1 experience; a Graduate Certificate (GPA 4/7) plus 3 years experience; a cognate Graduate Diploma (GPA 4/7); or 10 years relevant experience.
