This graduate certificate introduces anthropology as a way to understand contemporary cultural lives in comparative perspective. You will explore how global issues such as climate change, migration and xenophobia intersect with local contexts, and how policies, technologies and institutions shape everyday life. The program emphasises ethnography and its use across interdisciplinary settings, and can be taken as a standalone award or a pathway to further study.

Students develop critical, applied skills for cross-cultural analysis grounded in anthropological theory and ethnographic approaches. The program builds capability to interpret cultural diversity, connect global systems and policy frameworks to community perspectives, and communicate anthropological insights clearly. Graduates may pursue roles where understanding people and cultures is central, using ethnographic methods in varied settings. Opportunities include community and advocacy organisations, cultural and heritage institutions, government and public policy, NGOs and international organisations, and applied research roles in business, design, development and entrepreneurship. The qualification supports work requiring cultural analysis, stakeholder engagement and evidence-based insights across diverse communities.
Entry requirements
Applicants need a Bachelor degree (or international equivalent) with a minimum GPA of 4/7. All applicants must also meet ANU’s English Language Admission Requirements. Credit may be available for applicants with prior study in a cognate discipline, subject to the ANU Coursework Award Rules.
