The Bachelor of Fine Arts (Film and Television) at the Victorian College of the Arts develops your creative voice and the skills to produce distinctive screen programs across all stages of film and television production. Students gain creative, technical and analytical capability through an environment that encourages innovation and experimentation, and they write, direct and edit their own work while also crewing on peers’ productions. The course provides access to specialist facilities including production and animation studios, cinemas, professional camera/audio kits and post-production resources, alongside breadth subjects to support cross-disciplinary learning.

Students develop advanced practical filmmaking skills such as directing actors, cinematography, sound recording, editing, production management and assistant directing. The course aims to build strong research, development and screenwriting abilities for narrative short films while strengthening an individual creative voice through collaborative production work. It also develops critical skills to evaluate screen production within the broader history and culture of screen media.

Graduates are prepared for work across film and television production, with pathways into creative and technical roles in the screen industries. Potential roles include writer, director, screenwriter, editor, cinematographer, film producer and TV producer, supported by extensive hands-on production experience and collaborative practice. Graduates may also progress to further study, including an Honours year as a pathway into advanced graduate study.
