This elite engineering honours degree combines core engineering study with early, sustained involvement in project-based research and development. You build strong foundations while working alongside research groups across areas such as electronics, communications, mechatronics, renewable energy, environmental and aerospace systems. The degree develops capabilities in systems thinking, practical problem-solving, and research methods, supported by study in mathematics, physics and programming. Through an engineering major, you deepen expertise in a chosen systems area and build experience working with research-led teams and contemporary engineering tools and approaches.

Graduates are prepared for R&D-focused engineering careers in industries where innovation and advanced systems design are central. Potential pathways include aerospace and uncrewed systems, robotics and mechatronics, renewable and sustainable energy, electronics and communications, environmental and infrastructure-related technology, and defence and advanced manufacturing. The strong research component also supports progression to higher degrees and roles in research organisations and technology development teams.
Entry requirements
Entry is highly competitive. Applicants typically need an ATAR of 98 (or equivalent) or an IB score of 42. Applicants must also meet ANU undergraduate admission requirements and any program prerequisites. Progression in the program requires maintaining a high weighted average mark (WAM) in compulsory courses, with students transferred to another engineering program if the minimum standard is not met.
