For students coming from Singapore, the time between finishing your degree and attending your graduation ceremony can vary significantly depending on the university. Some students may finish their studies and graduate a few weeks later. Others may complete their course at the end of the year but attend their graduation ceremony several months later.

This matters if you are planning to fly back to Singapore, start a job, apply for another course or have your parents fly overseas for your graduation.

So, when do overseas degrees graduate? The answer depends on your university’s academic calendar, your course completion date and when your degree is formally awarded.

University Graduation Dates 2027: Course Completion vs Graduation

Before looking at individual universities, it helps to understand three separate stages:

For example, ANU specifically distinguishes between the conferral of an award, which officially makes you a graduate, and the graduation ceremony, which is a separate celebration.

This means you could technically become a graduate before you put on your graduation gown.

UK University Graduation Ceremony Dates

UK universities often hold graduation ceremonies in summer, but some also have winter ceremonies. Your exact date can depend on your course, faculty and when your degree is formally awarded.

The University of Bristol is a good example of why students should not assume that finishing their final semester means they will graduate immediately.

For 2027, Bristol has two main graduation periods:

• 23–26 February 2027 – February graduation
• 5–16 July 2027 – July graduation

For undergraduate students expected to complete a degree that is awarded at the June 2027 exam board, Bristol says they will be invited to register for the July 2027 graduation period.

This creates a clear timeline for a student coming from Singapore:

Bristol also publishes individual ceremony dates by course. For example, its February 2027 schedule lists Accounting and Finance BSc and MSc students under a specific ceremony on 26 February.

The University of Leeds also separates its graduation periods from the academic year.

Its next planned on-campus graduation period in July 2027 runs from 12 to 29 July 2027. The university says the detailed schedule is normally published around March or early April. December 2027 dates had not yet been confirmed when the university’s page was last updated.

Leeds also allows students who cannot attend their assigned ceremony to choose a later graduation in some circumstances, usually the next July or December, or choose not to attend.

For students coming from Singapore, this matters because you may not need to plan an immediate return flight after your final assessments. Your graduation could take place later.

University of Sheffield

The University of Sheffield also has specific arrangements for graduation ceremonies.

Graduation ceremonies are organised according to department and degree programme, with students receiving information about their ceremony once their graduation arrangements have been confirmed. The university publishes graduation periods in advance, but the exact ceremony date and time depend on the individual student’s programme.

For students planning to fly overseas for their graduation ceremony, this is an important detail. A university may announce a general graduation period before confirming the specific ceremony details for each student. Sheffield also provides information on what students need to do before attending their ceremony, so it is important to check your individual graduation arrangements before making travel plans.

Australian University Graduation Dates

Australian universities can have several graduation periods throughout the year. This is particularly important if you are comparing universities that use different academic calendars.

Deakin is a strong example because its graduation schedule connects the trimester you complete with the later graduation ceremony.

For 2027, Deakin lists:

Deakin notes that additional ceremony dates may depend on numbers, and graduation dates can change. Most importantly, the university tells students not to book flights or make other preparations until their results are released and their eligibility to graduate is confirmed.

That makes Deakin particularly useful to look at if you are planning your university experience around a trimester system.

UWA shows how a student can finish their studies in one part of the year and attend graduation months later.

For students completing their course at the end of 2026, UWA’s February 2027 graduation ceremonies run from 8–17 February 2027. Students completing their studies around the middle of 2027 can attend ceremonies scheduled for 30 August–3 September 2027.

UWA also offers an in-absentia option. This allows students to have their award conferred without attending a physical graduation ceremony.

This could be useful for students coming from Singapore who have already moved on to another country, started working or cannot justify another international trip just for graduation.

澳大利亚国立大学 (ANU)

ANU provides another clear example of the difference between conferral and ceremony.

Its 2027 Graduation Celebrations run from 6–12 February 2027 at Llewellyn Hall in Canberra. ANU says graduates whose awards were conferred in 2026 are invited to these 2027 celebrations.

Students also need to register for their ceremony, with registration for the February 2027 celebrations closing on 18 January 2027. Guest tickets are managed through the graduation portal, and additional tickets may become available depending on venue capacity.

For parents coming from Singapore, this is something to plan for well in advance.
