The UK Graduate Visa often called the 研究生路线 or post-study work Visa allows International Students who complete an eligible qualification in the UK to stay and work, or look for work, without needing a job offer or employer sponsorship. Introduced in July 2021, it has become one of the most important factors students weigh when choosing the UK as a study destination. However, the route is changing. Following the UK Government’s May 2025 Immigration White Paper and the October 2025 Statement of Changes, the standard post-study period will be reduced from two years to 18 months for applications made from 1 January 2027. Who Is Eligible?
Eligibility is assessed under Appendix Graduate of the Immigration Rules using a 70-point system. All requirements must be met and strength in one area cannot compensate for weakness in another. In summary, you must:
- Be in the UK at the time of application, holding (or having last held) Student or Tier 4 (General) permission.

How Long Does the Visa Last?
The Graduate Visa cannot be extended, and time spent on it does not count directly towards settlement (Indefinite Leave to Remain). Most holders who wish to stay longer switch into the Skilled Worker route or another eligible category before their permission expires.
What Does It Cost?
Applicants currently pay an application fee of £880, plus the Immigration Health Surcharge (IHS) of £1,035 per year of the Visa. The full amount is payable upfront at the point of application, and dependants (where eligible) each pay the same fees. A priority service offering a faster decision may be available for an additional charge.
What Can You Do on the Visa?
Graduate Visa holders can work full-time in most jobs at any skill level, switch employers freely, undertake voluntary work, and be self-employed. There are no sponsorship requirement and no minimum salary. The main restrictions are that holders cannot work as professional sportspeople and cannot access public funds. Further study is permitted only on courses that would not qualify for a Student Visa.
Why Is the Route Changing?

Factor Visa timelines into course selection. If post-study work rights matter to you, check when your course finishes and whether you would realistically be able to apply before the 31 December 2026 cut-off.
Confirm your provider’s compliance status. Only graduates of licensed institutions with a track record of compliance qualify and verify this before enrolling.
Do not wait until your Student Visa expires. You must apply from inside the UK while you still hold (or have just held) Student permission, and only after your university has reported your course completion to the Home Office.
Treat the Graduate Visa as a stepping stone. Because it cannot be extended, start exploring routes such as the Skilled Worker Visa early. Waiting until the final months can leave too little time to secure sponsorship.
Budget for the full cost upfront. Fees and the health surcharge must be paid in full at application, with no instalment option.
Maintain immigration compliance throughout your studies. Breaches of Visa conditions can jeopardise your eligibility.
