The Master of Philosophy in Applied Epidemiology (MAE) is a research-focused program preparing future public health leaders through applied, field-based training. Delivered via a supervised research program with increased independence, it combines a work placement, intensive coursework blocks and a substantial thesis. The MAE is Australia’s Field Epidemiology Training Program and is part of the international TEPHINET network, strengthening capability to detect and respond to health threats.

The program builds skills in designing and conducting epidemiological studies, evaluating or establishing surveillance systems, and communicating evidence to technical and lay audiences. Candidates also learn to produce publishable research and present findings professionally, culminating in an examined thesis and oral examination.

Entry requirements

Applicants must meet ANU English language requirements and be competitive for selection. A relevant Bachelor Honours degree (or equivalent) is required, normally with at least Second Class Honours Upper (H2A), or an equivalent mix of qualifications, research outputs and/or professional experience. Admission also depends on supervisory capacity and resources. Supporting documents include academic transcripts, an up‑to‑date CV, at least three referee reports and completion of supplementary questions, with suitability assessed via interview and documents.
