This 72-unit master’s degree offers in-depth, interdisciplinary study of the Middle East and Central Asia through perspectives such as contemporary politics, international relations, modern history, political economy, development studies, sociology, and religious and cultural studies. It is designed for both emerging specialists and working professionals, with intensive study options and some online study available alongside face-to-face seminars with leading experts.

Students build advanced regional knowledge and analytical skills for understanding Middle Eastern and Central Asian societies, politics and cultures. The program develops capability in critical perspectives, research methods and applied inquiry through research training and a research project, supported by advanced disciplinary coursework. Options to study relevant regional languages help strengthen cultural literacy and engagement with sources and communities.

Graduates may pursue roles requiring regional and geopolitical expertise, such as policy and analysis positions in government, defence and security, diplomacy and international organisations, NGOs and development agencies, and research institutions. The program also supports careers in media, consultancy and international business with a Middle East/Central Asia focus, and provides a pathway to further research or doctoral study.
Entry requirements
Applicants need a Bachelor degree (or international equivalent) with a minimum GPA of 5.0/7. Applicants with a Bachelor Degree or Graduate Certificate in a cognate discipline may be eligible for up to 24 units (one semester) of credit. Entry is competitive and applicants must also meet ANU English language requirements; meeting minimum requirements does not guarantee admission.
