This apprenticeship qualification develops specialist patternmaking skills for engineering design and manufacturing. You’ll learn to produce patterns for moulds used in cast metal products across industries such as mining, rail and automotive. Training covers CAD/CAM, CNC manual techniques, working with timber and resins, metal shrinkage calculation, and creating prototype and visual models, with exposure to current technologies such as 3D printing. It is a Certificate III in engineering patternmaking.

Graduates can work as trade-qualified patternmakers supporting engineering design and fabrication. Typical work involves producing patterns and models (wood, plastic, metal or polystyrene) used to create moulds for metal castings and prototype parts. Opportunities may be found in foundries and manufacturing environments, including mining, construction, rail and automotive supply chains, using CAD/CAM and CNC processes. It is a Certificate III pathway into engineering patternmaking roles.
