This graduate certificate introduces national security concepts and practical policy skills for professionals working in, or with, the Australian security system. It explores contemporary and emerging security challenges in Australia and the region, and how policy is developed to protect democratic institutions. Students learn alongside experienced practitioners through the ANU National Security College, a joint initiative with the Australian Government, and can choose electives on risks such as climate change, terrorism and cyber threats.

Graduates are prepared for roles supporting national security policy and practice across government and aligned organisations. Typical pathways include policy officer/adviser positions, strategic and risk analysis roles, security and resilience planning, and program or capability support in defence, intelligence-adjacent areas, foreign affairs, border and emergency management, cyber and critical infrastructure. The qualification also suits professionals in consulting, NGOs or industry who collaborate with government on security, technology and regional challenges.

Entry requirements

Applicants must meet one pathway: a Bachelor, Graduate Diploma, or Graduate Certificate (or equivalent) with GPA 4/7; or 24 postgraduate units with GPA 4/7. Alternative entry includes a GRE General test (within 5 years) with minimum 155 Verbal, 155 Quantitative and 4.0 Analytical Writing plus 3 years relevant ANZSCO Skill Level 1 experience, or at least 5 years relevant ANZSCO Skill Level 1 experience. English requirements also apply.
