This one-year research-led honours program develops advanced biotechnology capability through a substantial supervised research project. Biotechnology applies living systems and biological products to solve real-world problems across medicine, biology, agriculture, manufacturing, renewable energy and engineering. Students complete an honours specialisation aligned with ANU teaching and research strengths, gaining experience designing and implementing research to generate new understanding or address complex challenges.

The program strengthens research design, data analysis and scientific communication, and develops the ability to investigate complex problems using appropriate experimental or analytical approaches. Honours specialisations allow you to tailor the focus to an aligned discipline while keeping the research project grounded in biotechnology.

Graduates are prepared for research-focused roles or progression to higher degrees by research (e.g., PhD). Typical pathways include laboratory and R&D positions in biotechnology and life sciences across health and medical research, pharmaceuticals, agriculture and food innovation, environmental and renewable technologies, and advanced manufacturing. Skills developed also support roles requiring experimental design, quantitative analysis, and professional scientific reporting and communication.

Entry requirements

Applicants must meet ANU program-specific academic/non-academic and English language requirements. Entry is competitive due to limited places. To be eligible, applicants need an AQF Level 7 Bachelor of Biotechnology (or equivalent) completed within the last two years, with a weighted average mark equivalent to ANU 70% based on the best 36 units in a cognate discipline (excluding 1000-level courses). Honours admission also depends on supervisory capacity and College approval.
