Taking the step in furthering your studies can be daunting enough, let alone leaving the comforts of home and studying abroad Down Under.
As a former international student from Malaysia who completed my entire degree and been calling Brisbane home since 2006, I present you some invaluable tips as you embark on your student life in Australia.

Download the right apps
  • Transport: Uber, Didi, Ola, GoCatch, Shebah, Scooti (scooters),
  • Food: Uber Eats, Menulog, Deliveroo, Hey You (coffee), Happy Cow (vegans & vegetarians). For more authentic Asian food, download Easi and Hungry Panda
  • Google Maps > Waze. Nobody ever uses Waze here
  • Pay-Apps: Liven (Melbourne, Sydney, Brisbane), Payo (Sydney, Melbourne, Brisbane, Gold Coast), Ritual (Melbourne, Sydney, Brisbane)

Buy a water filter flask, to filter tap water
Otherwise, tap water is also generally safe to consume hence no need to buy water bottles.

Bring a reusable takeaway box
In the likelihood that you cannot finish your meal. Meal portions here are much bigger, and they charge you for using takeaway boxes (based on quantity).

Get almost half-priced food 15-30 minutes before the food court closing hours
As they try to get rid of unsold food and cook fresh for the next day.

Use public transport or get a scooter
  • Public transportation are much more efficient in Australia. Staying close to main roads and/or stations ensures that you are less likely to need a car.
  • Scooter is cheap, fast, and eco-friendly. Saves you couple of bucks paying public transport and car petrol.

Cook more!
It’s definitely cheaper to eat at home, as dining out can be very costly (Average $15-20 p/p). Good reason to pick-up new culinary skills too!

An important consideration when entering university is ensuring that the course is accredited or recognised in the field that you wish to start a career in.

认可学位 are degrees recognised by professional bodies of their respective professions. Most professions require these degrees in order for anyone to work in the field. For example, a Lawyer who obtained a law degree overseas and wishes to practice law in Malaysia needs to:

  1. 获得律师协会的认可Only selected degrees recognised by Legal Profession Qualifying Board (LPQB) will be able to apply for the membership of the Bar in your home country.
  2. 注册成为会员并获得律师资格
Here are some courses that require accreditation from a professional board.

Unsure whether your preferred course requires accreditation?
