This Doctor of Philosophy in Aboriginal Studies develops advanced research capability grounded in Indigenous ways of knowing, being and doing. You will undertake an original research project shaped by Indigenous ontology and epistemology, guided by ethics, reciprocity and accountability, and focused on meaningful benefit to people, communities, Country and environment. Study options include thesis, publication-based thesis, or creative work with exegesis in Arts & Humanities.

You’ll learn to critically reflect on theory and practice, evaluate and extend existing knowledge, and conduct systematic investigation that generates original contributions. The course develops advanced methodological, creative/technical and professional research skills, including designing and communicating research, critiquing propositions and conclusions, and presenting complex work for external examination to international standards in Arts & Humanities.

Graduates can pursue research and leadership roles where Indigenous knowledge and community impact are central. Career pathways may include research fellow, project lead, consultant or independent practitioner, contributing to community-led initiatives, policy and program development, and knowledge-sharing. Employment may be found across government and non-government sectors, community services, education and training, environmental protection and health, aligned with PhD-level practice in Arts & Humanities.
