This two-year Master of Science (Advanced) in Precision Instrumentation and Measurement develops expertise in cutting-edge scientific measurement and instrumentation across physics, earth sciences and astronomy. You learn from leading ANU research schools and engage with real-world applications such as advanced imaging, optics, electronics, and data analysis. The program blends advanced coursework with substantial project work and an individual research thesis in scientific instrumentation and measurement.

Graduates may work in research organisations, universities, national laboratories, advanced manufacturing and high-technology industries where measurement and instrumentation are critical. Roles can include instrumentation scientist/engineer, research officer, experimental physicist, systems integration specialist, imaging or optics specialist, and R&D technologist. The combination of coursework and a substantial thesis also supports progression to doctoral study in sciences focused on precision instrumentation and measurement.
Entry requirements
Applicants typically need a relevant bachelor degree in a cognate science/engineering discipline with strong academic performance. To remain in the Advanced stream, students must maintain at least a 70% weighted average mark in the first 48 units and obtain approval from an identified supervisor for the research project (often requiring on-campus attendance). Those not meeting these conditions may be transferred to the non-Advanced master’s or a graduate diploma.
