This apprenticeship qualification develops trade skills to work as a machinist in mechanical engineering. You’ll learn to create and modify parts (often metal, plastic or wood), interpret technical drawings, and design, assemble, manufacture and install mechanical components. Training also covers fault-finding, maintenance and servicing of mechanical equipment, machinery and fluid power systems, using current industry technology and practices. The programme focuses on applied engineering drawings, workshop skills, and technical maintenance competencies.

Graduates can pursue work supporting mechanical engineering operations in workshops and industrial settings where machining, maintenance and repair are required. Typical roles include machinist and mechanical engineering technician, with opportunities across industries that manufacture, modify or service mechanical equipment. This Certificate III supports entry to trade-recognised work in mechanical engineering machining through an apprenticeship pathway.
