This graduate certificate provides a multidisciplinary introduction to human rights, drawing on political theory, philosophy, anthropology, education, social work, development studies and legal frameworks. You will explore human rights ideas across cultural, religious and political traditions and consider how these can be applied in contemporary practice in Australia and internationally. It can also be used as an entry pathway to Curtin’s Master of Human Rights in the Law discipline.

You’ll learn to apply human rights principles and concepts in work and community settings, critically analyse policy and moral issues using a human rights framework, and develop human rights-based responses to social and political problems. The course builds skills in locating and evaluating evidence and literature, communicating complex analysis in writing and speech, using technologies to gather and share information, and working ethically and collaboratively across diverse cultural contexts.

Graduates typically work in roles focused on protecting and advancing human rights or raising awareness of rights issues. Career directions include positions in education, health, law, social work and development practice across government, private and not-for-profit organisations, including NGOs. Some graduates also contribute through advocacy and community engagement in voluntary capacities, supporting social justice, peace and sustainability. This is a Graduate Certificate qualification aligned to human rights practice within Law.
