This one-year honours program builds on prior study in politics, philosophy and economics and reflects ANU’s research-led education. It is designed to provide high-level preparation for professional roles or further study by research. Students deepen advanced disciplinary knowledge and undertake a substantial independent research project, culminating in a 20,000-word thesis, supported by honours-level methods training and specialised coursework options.

You will strengthen advanced understanding of key theoretical concepts across politics, philosophy and economics and learn research principles and methods used in honours-level work. The program develops your ability to frame complex questions, design an appropriate methodology, analyse evidence critically and communicate findings clearly. A major focus is planning and completing an independent thesis project under supervision to produce original insights or solutions to complex problems.

Graduates are prepared for analytical and research-focused pathways in government and public policy, political and economic analysis, think tanks, international affairs and consulting, as well as roles in research and strategy in the public and private sectors. The intensive thesis and methods training also provides strong preparation for postgraduate research (higher degree by research) and related academic or policy research careers.

Entry requirements

Applicants must meet ANU program-specific academic/non-academic and English language requirements. Entry is competitive and honours admission depends on supervisory capacity and approval. Normally requires an AQF Level 7 BPPE (or equivalent) completed within the last two years with a weighted average mark equivalent to 70% (based on best 36 units excluding 1000-level), plus written approval of an identified thesis supervisor and any specialisation requirements.
