How Much GPA Do You Need To Go To University From Poly?

How much GPA to go university from poly for Singapore students

Finishing poly does not always mean starting an overseas degree from Year 1. Depending on your GPA and diploma, you may qualify for direct entry, credit transfer or advanced entry into Year 2 or Year 3.

The important part is that universities do not use one GPA requirement for every course. Monash, for example, currently lists a 2.0 GPA for its Bachelor of Business but 3.0 for its Bachelor of Commerce and Economics. The amount of credit also depends on your diploma.

The same applies in the UK. The University of Surrey’s current Singapore entry requirements equate a 3.2 poly GPA to an A*AA UK requirement, while a 2.5 GPA is listed as equivalent to CCC. Suitably qualified applicants can also be considered for Year 2 entry.

Information
There is no single GPA requirement
So, when asking how much GPA to go to university from poly, look at the actual university, degree and diploma rather than a general GPA range.

Monash University: Some Degrees Accept A 2.0 GPA

Monash is one of the clearest examples of how requirements can differ between courses.

For approved diplomas from Singapore’s five polytechnics, Monash currently lists a 2.0 GPA for the Bachelor of Business, Bachelor of Accounting, Bachelor of Banking and Finance and Bachelor of Marketing. The Bachelor of Commerce, Bachelor of Economics, Bachelor of Finance and Bachelor of Actuarial Science require 3.0.

The diploma can also reduce the degree length. For several approved business diplomas, Monash provides one year of block credit, up to 48 credit points, reducing the standard three-year degree to two years.

The same applies outside business. Monash lists a 2.0 GPA for several engineering pathways involving approved Singapore Polytechnic diplomas, with some receiving half a year of credit. Its IT pathways can also accept a 2.0 GPA, with selected diplomas receiving enough credit to reduce the degree to two or 2.5 years.

This shows why your diploma matters alongside your GPA.

University Of Sydney: 2.8 To 3.2 Depending On The Degree

The University of Sydney uses diploma-specific admission and credit arrangements.

Its 2026 Singapore Polytechnic guide lists 3.0 CGPA for several Bachelor of Advanced Computing pathways, including relevant IT, cybersecurity and computing diplomas. Eligible applicants can receive credit based on their completed diploma.

Other Sydney degrees have different requirements. The current guide includes 2.8 CGPA for selected Bachelor of Arts and Bachelor of Science pathways, while specific architecture pathways require 3.2 CGPA. The amount of credit also changes depending on the diploma and chosen programme.

This means a 2.8 GPA could be enough for one Sydney pathway but not another. Your diploma title needs to be checked alongside the course requirement.

RMIT University: Your Diploma Can Shorten The Degree

RMIT University has established pathways for Singapore polytechnic graduates.

The university recognises relevant diploma qualifications for advanced standing, which can reduce the amount of study required for some bachelor’s degrees. The exact amount of credit depends on your diploma, the degree you choose and how closely the subjects match.

For example, relevant diplomas in IT, computing, business, engineering and design may provide credit towards corresponding RMIT bachelor’s degrees. This means some students may be able to complete their degree in less time than the standard duration.

The important point is that credit is based on the relationship between your previous diploma and your chosen degree. A diploma does not automatically remove the same amount of study from every course.

UK Universities: Your GPA Can Affect Year 1, Year 2 Or Year 3 Entry

UK universities can offer a different advantage for poly graduates because some consider advanced entry based on your diploma.

At Nottingham Trent University, a Singapore Polytechnic Advanced or Specialist Diploma with an average grade of 60% or above can be considered for advanced entry. NTU also states that students with diplomas can be considered for second- or third-year entry for a number of courses.

Sheffield Hallam University publishes a 2.0+ GPA as its general Singapore Polytechnic Diploma requirement for Year 1 undergraduate entry. It also states that applicants with a College Diploma, HND or Advanced Diploma can be considered for Year 2 or Year 3 advanced entry, depending on the course.

The University of Surrey publishes a more detailed GPA equivalency table:

UK A-Level RequirementSingapore Polytechnic GPA
A*AA3.2
AAA3.1
AAB3.0
ABB2.9
BBB2.8
BBC2.7
BCC2.6
CCC2.5

Surrey also states that suitably qualified polytechnic applicants can be considered for Year 2 entry.

This is why you should check not only whether your GPA meets the university’s requirement, but also whether your diploma qualifies you for advanced entry.

What Does Advanced Standing Mean For Poly Graduates?

Advanced standing for poly graduates means the university recognises some of your previous studies and allows you to enter the degree with credit.

For example, an approved Monash business diploma can provide one year of credit, while some Australian pathways can reduce a three-year degree to two years or less.

In the UK, advanced standing can mean entering directly into Year 2 or Year 3 instead of starting from Year 1. Your diploma therefore affects both whether you qualify and how long you need to study.

A Diploma in IT, for example, is more likely to receive credit towards a related computing degree than an unrelated degree such as Psychology. Universities assess the subjects and learning completed in your diploma before deciding how much credit applies.

Tip
Your diploma matters as much as your GPA
Two students with the same GPA may receive different admission or credit outcomes because universities also assess the diploma, subjects completed and how closely previous study matches the chosen degree.

Australian University Credit Transfer From Poly: What Gets Assessed?

An Australian university credit transfer from poly is not based on GPA alone.

Universities can consider:

  • Your final GPA
  • Your specific polytechnic diploma
  • The subjects you completed
  • The similarity between your diploma and degree
  • The number of credits that can be matched
  • Any course-specific prerequisites

Monash and the University of Sydney both publish credit arrangements based on specific diplomas and degrees. Some pathways receive a full year of credit, while others receive smaller amounts or require further assessment.

This is why two students with the same GPA can receive different outcomes if they hold different diplomas.

What If Your GPA Is Below 3.0?

A GPA below 3.0 does not automatically remove overseas university options.

For example, Monash currently lists 2.0 for its Bachelor of Business, Accounting, Banking and Finance and Marketing pathways, while the Bachelor of Commerce requires 3.0.

UK universities also have pathways below 3.0. Surrey’s published equivalency table goes down to 2.5, while Sheffield Hallam lists 2.0+ for general Year 1 entry from a Singapore Polytechnic Diploma.

The key is to compare your GPA with the actual course requirement. If your preferred course requires a higher GPA, you can then look at another related degree, another university or a pathway route.

Your diploma should remain part of that decision, as choosing a course with a lower GPA requirement may not provide the same credit or advanced-entry opportunities.
