Course Taking Longer Than Expected? We’ve Got Your Back!

Sometimes, things don’t go exactly according to plan. You may need to repeat a unit, take additional subjects, extend your research, or simply need more time to complete your course.

If your course now finishes after your current Student visa expires, don’t panic. You may be able to continue your studies in Australia by applying for a new Student visa (subclass 500).

Here’s what you need to know.

Can I extend my student visa in Australia?

Technically, an Australian Student visa cannot simply be “extended”. If your current visa will expire before you can complete your studies, you will generally need to apply for a new Student visa (subclass 500) to continue studying in Australia.

Why Might You Need a New Student Visa?

There are many reasons why your studies may take longer than originally expected, including:

  • Repeating or failing a unit
  • Changing your study plan
  • Needing additional time to complete your course
  • Changes to your research or thesis
  • Approved course deferral or suspension
  • Other circumstances that affect your expected completion date

If your new course completion date is later than your current visa expiry date, you should start preparing early.

Step 1: Speak to Your Education Provider

Your first step should be to contact your university, college or education provider.

If you genuinely require additional time to complete your studies, your provider may extend your enrolment and issue you a new Confirmation of Enrolment (CoE) with your updated course dates.

A valid CoE is an important part of a Student visa application. Your CoE generally needs to remain valid while the Department of Home Affairs assesses your application.

Step 2: Check Your Student Visa Expiry Date

Don’t assume that your visa automatically changes when your course dates change.

Your Student visa has its own expiry date. You can check your visa details and conditions through Visa Entitlement Verification Online (VEVO).

If your new expected course completion date falls after your visa expiry date, you may need to lodge a new Student visa application.

Step 3: Check Your OSHC

International students are generally required to maintain Overseas Student Health Cover (OSHC) while holding a Student visa.

If your studies have been extended, you may also need to extend your OSHC so that it covers the required period.

Your OSHC expiry date can also affect the period for which your Student visa is granted, so make sure your health cover matches your circumstances.

Step 4: Prepare Your Documents

The documents required will depend on your individual circumstances, but you may need to prepare documents such as:

  • A valid passport
  • Your new Confirmation of Enrolment (CoE)
  • Evidence of your OSHC
  • Academic or enrolment documents
  • Financial evidence, where required
  • English language evidence, where required
  • Genuine Student-related information and supporting documents
  • Any other documents requested for your application

Make sure you check the latest document requirements before submitting your application.

Step 5: Apply for a New Student Visa

Once you have your new CoE and required documents, you can generally apply for a new Student visa (subclass 500) through your ImmiAccount.

If you’re applying from within Australia, don’t leave it until the last day of your current visa. Preparing early gives you more time to deal with missing documents or unexpected issues.

Visa application charges can also change, so always check the current fee before applying.

What Happens After You Apply?

If you make a valid visa application while you are in Australia, your circumstances may allow you to remain lawfully in Australia while the government processes your new visa application.

However, your exact visa status, conditions and travel rights depend on your circumstances. Always check your visa grant information and VEVO, particularly if you plan to travel while your application is being processed.

Don’t Wait Until the Last Minute

Realising that your course finishes after your visa expires can be stressful, but the important thing is to start preparing early.

Check your course dates, speak with your education provider, obtain your updated CoE, review your OSHC and make sure you understand the requirements for your next Student visa application.
