This Master of Philosophy (Geographic Information Science) is a higher degree by research that builds advanced knowledge beyond honours or a postgraduate diploma, culminating in a supervised research thesis. At least two-thirds of the program is research, with any coursework playing a supporting role. You develop the capacity to conceive, design and complete independent research and may progress to PhD consideration. It is a master by research in geographic information science.

You’ll develop mastery of theoretical knowledge and critically reflect on its application. You’ll investigate and synthesise complex concepts, generate and evaluate abstract ideas, and design and apply appropriate research methods. You’ll also learn to communicate research plans and findings to peers and the wider community, producing and disseminating original research that contributes to knowledge and/or professional practice.

Graduates are prepared for research-focused roles where advanced spatial and geospatial analysis is required, including positions in government agencies, environmental and planning organisations, infrastructure and resources sectors, and research institutes. The thesis-based training also supports progression to doctoral study and careers in academia.
