This advanced master’s degree develops deep expertise in Earth Sciences through a combination of interdisciplinary coursework and substantial supervised research. You explore the systems and processes shaping the planet and can select from a wide range of research areas such as geochemistry, geophysics, geology, ocean and climate change, and planetary sciences. The program emphasises research training leading into an extended research project.

You build advanced research capability in Earth Sciences, including research design, methods, and scientific communication. The program develops skills in critical analysis of Earth processes, working across multiple sub-disciplines, and preparing a research proposal and presentation. With expert supervision, you undertake a major research project and strengthen your ability to interpret data, communicate findings, and contribute to contemporary Earth science research.

Graduates are prepared for research-focused roles across Earth and environmental science sectors. Career pathways may include geoscientist or earth scientist roles in government and industry, research assistant or analyst positions, geochemistry or geophysics-related work, climate and ocean science roles, and progression to a PhD. The strong research component also supports careers in scientific consulting, laboratories, and resource or environmental assessment.

Applicants need a Bachelor degree (or international equivalent) with a minimum GPA of 5.5/7.0 overall and at least 8 courses in a cognate discipline also averaging at least 5.5/7.0 (best 8 cognate courses may be used). Admission is competitive and applicants must also meet ANU English language requirements; meeting minimum criteria does not guarantee an offer.
