The Master of Asian Studies builds advanced understanding of Asian cultures, histories and languages through interdisciplinary study. Students learn within a strong community of regional experts and can tailor the degree across areas such as archaeology, history, anthropology, gender and cultural studies, linguistics, literature and translation. The program emphasises comparative inquiry and collaboration, and offers opportunities for language study and in-country learning.

The program strengthens methods for analysing culture, history and language, and supports building networks across regional and disciplinary perspectives. Through advanced coursework and project-based learning, students learn to frame research questions, apply appropriate concepts and tools, and communicate findings for scholarly debate and practical problem-solving related to Asia and the Pacific.

Graduates can pursue roles requiring deep Asia expertise and strong research and analysis skills. Career pathways may include policy and research positions in government, think tanks and international organisations; consultancy and industry roles with Asia-facing portfolios; cultural and education sectors; media and communications; and further research study. Training in languages, comparative analysis and collaborative inquiry supports work across cross-cultural and regional contexts.

Applicants need a cognate bachelor degree (or equivalent), typically with a minimum GPA of 5/7. Alternative pathways include a cognate bachelor with GPA 4/7 plus a graduate certificate (GPA 4/7), or relevant ANZSCO Skill Level 1 work experience (3+ years) combined with specified prior study; a cognate graduate diploma (GPA 4/7) may also qualify. English language requirements must be met; admission is competitive.
