This 1.5-year advanced master’s in art history and curatorial studies is delivered by ANU’s School of Art and Design and is positioned alongside Australia’s major national collecting institutions in Canberra. The program combines advanced coursework with supervised research and a substantial thesis, and is supported by strong links to leading galleries, museums and libraries for industry engagement and professional experience.

You will develop advanced knowledge of art histories and curatorial practice across areas such as Australian and Asian art, modern and contemporary art and design, and critical approaches to collecting and exhibition-making. The degree builds research capability through seminars and independent study, culminating in a thesis completed under an approved supervisor, strengthening skills in scholarly analysis, writing and professional curatorial work.

Graduates are prepared for roles in museums, galleries and cultural institutions, including curatorial and collections work, exhibitions and public programs, audience development, and research support. The combination of research training and practical curatorial study can also support pathways into heritage and cultural policy organisations, arts administration, publishing and education, or progression to further higher degree research.

Applicants must hold either a cognate Bachelor degree (or international equivalent) with a minimum GPA of 6/7, or a Bachelor degree plus a Graduate Certificate or Graduate Diploma in a cognate discipline with a minimum GPA of 5/7. Applicants also require approval from an identified supervisor for the proposed research project/thesis.
